THE HAPPINESS: WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO ATTAIN IT


We ever asked ourselves what humans want most in life? If we have to answer in quick way, it might be words “money, wealth, healthy, good position in carrier, (It could be becoming manager or CEO in a prestigious corporate or organization, or a leader in government or political institution)” coming up in our minds. If we have a little time to think a lot before giving an answer, we might be thinking about word “Happiness.” 

 

Yes, absolutely Happiness is a most important and long-lasting achievement pursued by all humans in the planet earth. But most of us seldom misunderstand about what exactly the happiness is, and are confusing how to pursue it. To breakdown the problem, it could be very important to understand deeply about happiness.

 

Firstly, what is happiness?

Happiness can be defined as an enduring state of mind consisting not only of feelings of joy, contentment, and other positive emotions, but also of a sense that one’s life is meaningful and valued (Lyubomirsky,2011)

 

Hedonic happiness is a moment to moment, temporary, and transient experience of joy. It concerns having a good time now and it firmly rooted in the present. On the other hand, eudaimonic happiness involves a ‘deep wellbeing in which a person feels that their life has a meaning and purpose” (Waldinger & Schulz, 2023, p,18)

 

But if we asked ordinary people in our community about how they descript happy feeling, we are likely to hear common answers “Happy feeling is the feeling of joy, calm and comfortable.” If we asked further about how to attain that such feeling, they would say that feeling of joy can be obtained by having joyful activity, it could be cooking, singing, traveling, talking with friend or anything that we love. The feeling of calm can be obtained by having no problem that could occupy our mind and heart. The feeling of comfortable can be obtained by having good physical and mental health. These answers have similarity with the definition of hedonic happiness by Waldinger & Schulz.

 

Only certain people (usually religious/spiritual or highly educated people) might consider the meaning, values ​​and purpose of life as parameters of happiness in life, as definition of happiness by Lyubomirsky  or definition of eudaimonic happiness by Waldinger & Schulz.

 

More definition of happiness you read, more difficult You understand and rather just might make confused. Well, in this article we try just making simple simple definition in order to be easier to understand. 

 

Happiness is a state of mind and heart where you feel joyfull or content. 

 

Secondly, How to attain i?

 

There are numerous articles about how to attain happiness in everyday life, either based on experience or research. But sometimes, that numerous articles do not make us clear understanding about the way to attain the happiness, rather just makes us more confused. Here are simple and step by step ways to pursue the happiness you have long been dream of;

 

1.     Create every moment in your life with joy

 

It could begin with waking up in the morning (whatever time you choose to wake up) with happily gesture, such as smile, getting very deep breath, then scroll your phone for joyful content, and then open your window with smile and don’t forget tidy up your bedroom. Just try do it whatever reality you’ve been struggling. I bet you will feel better and joyful.

 

Don’t forget to take bath conciously, I mean you must do it mindful; feel the warm or cool water soaking to you head and body, breathing deeply and feel the aroma of your favourite soap scent, wear your loved clothes with smile, then go to work with joy.

 

Just remember that whatever the hardness condition you face, try your best to do these tips, it will make you feel better. Often when we are in trouble (maybe financial, health issue or bad relationships with partners or friends), we are lazy or forget to take small steps in our daily activities happily.

 

2.     Avoid social problem (If it is avoidable, just make it lesser or smaller)

 

It is seen as just small thing, but actually have a huge impact in your life. Weather consciously or not, it is more likely disturbing and distracting you to feel the joyful moment. Imagine a small problem out there such as quarrel on the road with a fellow traffic user can ruin your mood for hours or even a day, and weather consciously or not, it is disturbing in enjoying your daily moment. Some tips to avoid social problem are positive thinking, maintain patience, communicate wisely and simplify any problem.

 

3.     Keep your body healthy 

 

Just like problem, health issue will also interfere your joyful moment, even could be severe than the impact of problem does. That’s why, keeping your body healthy is very important. Talking about ways in keeping body healthy, there are plenty steps need to implement such as having enough sleep, consume healthy food, maintain ideal body weight, regular exercise and maintain stress.

 

 

4.     Manage Financial 

 

Having no financial issue is everyone dream, but they often misunderstand about that. Having good finances often interpreted as having much amount of money, therefore all needs can be fulfilled, rather having balance revenue and expense. Balance revenue and expense means you do need seeking unhealthy loan, and create your financial free debt issue.

 

5.     Maintain Good Relationship

 

Having good relationship either with family or with friends or neighbours are essential in pursuing happiness, as some your joyful moment is created and celebrated with them. aving a bad relationship means you can't enjoy moments together with joy. In addition, a bad relationship at a certain level creates hostility that eventually disturbs your thoughts and feelings.
